This October, residents and staff of the Helderberg Society for the Aged came together to show support for National Breast Cancer Month with a series of heartwarming activities and a sea of pink! Together, we raised awareness, honored survivors, and remembered those affected by breast cancer. From pink-themed events to educational sessions, our HSFA family is united in hope and strength, spreading love and solidarity throughout our community.
As part of our mission to enhance the quality of care for our residents, the HSFA is committed to continually upskilling our team. Recently, a group of our employees attended an introductory workshop on Senior Mind Moves, exploring how specific Mind Moves® exercises improve movement, balance, and cognitive clarity. The interactive workshop began with the “three-in-one brain” theory, followed by insights into sensory development and its influence on our daily lives. Presenters also shared their firsthand experiences using Mind Moves in retirement communities, where it’s proven to enhance residents’ well-being.
Our goal is to train our carers to incorporate these exercises into our chair-based programs, helping residents maintain and even improve their physical and cognitive abilities.
“As we age, survival behavior can make us feel lost and vulnerable, causing our confidence to waver. Senior Mind Moves addresses this by slowing or even reversing the aging process through sensory, brain, and muscle stimulation. Simple, effective movements can dynamically improve quality of life, ensuring the world doesn’t shrink for our elderly.” — Melodie de Jager, Mind Moves Institute Researcher and Developer.

We’ve got an extra spring in our step! We are grateful for Gray Swan’s incredible generosity in once again sponsoring 300 pairs of shoes for our residents. Thank you, Gray Swan, for your continued support of Helderberg Society for the Aged. The shoes are being distributed to those of our residents in need, in our respective units and Garden Village.
Your commitment to our community enables us to provide sustainable, dignified care that enhances the quality of life for the elderly in a compassionate, respectful environment. PatchSA is a national network that focuses on supporting the provision of palliative care to an estimated 800,000 – 1,000,000 children living in South Africa with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, and their families. This year the HSFA staff participated in their #HatsOn4CPC Charity Competition by wearing some funky hats to help build awareness on World Palliative Care Day 2024 on this 14th October 2024. World Hospice and Palliative Care Day takes place on the second Saturday of October every year. It is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. @PatchPalliative
