The residents and staff of the HSFA welcomed the knowledge of Dr Van Zyl and Prof Maqungo, both specialists in Osteoporosis, at the HSFA last week. The talks were kindly arranged through Busamed Hospital. They were both very informative and highlighted the prevalence of Osteoporosis, its prevention and care alternatives. #osteoporosis #Busamed
The HSFA staff are ahead of our game as usual and have got our booster shots for Covid-19! The staff were initially part of the Sisonke Covid vaccination trials over 6 months previously where we were fully vaccinated with J&J and now welcomed the booster shots to ensure extra protection and additional safety of our residents. #COVID19 #covidprevention
How does one calm the mind and lift the spirits? With music of course! Talented musicians kindly came to play the residents of Vonke today at their internal craft market. Thanks to Yolande Botha and Antoinette Erasmus from the Helderberg Church for your beautiful sounds. These ladies amongst other musicians have been volunteering their time playing at hospitals for the hardworking nurses and doctors during shift changes. The residents of the HSFA enjoyed it so much. Thanks also goes to Dr Bryony May Together Against Covid for coordinating!
HSFA hosted a series of enjoyable (but Covid regulated) luncheons for their Assisted Living (Silver Oaks Lodge and Robari Lodge), Frailcare (Mountview and Support Centre) and some Independent Units (Vonke House and Swannack Gardens) residents to raise awareness regarding this campaign. The lunches had a beach theme staff and residents were encouraged to dress up in turquoise or beach gear and feel the sand between their toes, whilst sipping on turquoise cocktails and listening to tunes like ‘Kokomo’, ‘Under the Boardwalk’ and the like! Images of turquoise oceans were projected on the walls to transport the residents to favourite beach memories and Geratec served delicious a seafood cocktails, beach burgers and turquoise-coloured desserts. On 15th June – World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day –HSFA staff wore a turquoise ribbon in support of the “Turn Turquoise for the Elderly” National Campaign.
The Helderberg Society For the Aged received a much welcomed donation of PPE and two elderly walkers from the Rotary Club of Somerset West . The equipment was sourced from a Rotary International club in Canada. Having an excess of PPE in Canada, the Rotarian clubs made a coordinated effort to generously ship it on a container and distribute it to several charities in Somerset West and surrounds. The HSFA is most grateful to the Rotarians, and especially to Heather Botes (Community Services Director of Somerset West Rotary Club) for this wonderful initiative. Eppie Macfarlane from Somerset West Rotary Club handed over the donation on the day.
