World Alzheimer’s Day is on the 21 September each year to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds the disease. The Helderberg Society For the Aged has a Dementia care unit in our Support Centre with a specialised nursing team available 24/7. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.
