It is International Older Person’s week. Make contact with your special ones. Make their day: call them or video chat them, send flowers, send gifts – to make them feel extra important and missed during these difficult times of separation or isolation. Otherwise write to marketing@hsfa.org.za to your mum, dad, granny or granddad and the HSFA will make sure they get your message! #internationalolderpersonsday

Happy waves and smiling eyes were on every balcony and in every garden at the HSFA’s Vonke Park as the drone passed overhead so the HSFA residents could wave to their children locally and abroad! The Covid-19 lockdown has been essential for the safety of our residents, but also has not stopped the pouring out of love across long distances!

The gift of giving keeps residents and staff of the HSFA upbeat! Thank you Mrs Dally from Robari Lodge (HSFA Assisted Living Unit) for knitting for the Macassar elderly community. Beanies, scarves and socks were donated to beat the winter chills. Also, Sr Tina Labuschagne (one of the HSFA nurses in Nightingale) is one of the many staff who volunteered to live in the HSFA during the Covid-19 lockdown. Several Vonke House residents saw her knitting and asked if they could help. She provided them with wool and they knitted leg warmers and hand mitts for other thankful residents in her unit. Thank you Sister Labuschagne for going the extra mile to make our residents comfortable, and thank you too all the supportive residents who lent a helping hand!

As our staff left the HSFA premises, after being in voluntary lockdown for over 3.5 months, there was an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement to be reuniting with their families. Memories, bonds and new friendships were also formed between staff in their shared accommodation. The caring dedication of the staff was clear, and they left the lockdown knowing that they had done everything they could to help the HSFA prepare for the continued safety of our residents.
“Thank you heroes – and re-energise for the next challenges ahead!” Over 220 HSFA essential staff, as well as service providers, moved into various HSFA sites and nearby halls.
The community supported through donations of linen, blankets,TV’s, DVD’s, appliances and games to make the lockdown more comfortable. Several local organisations provided halls. Thank you’s go to:

The Helderberg Society for the Aged would like to thank the community for coming together in an effort to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus into the HSFA. That would include residents, staff, families, service providers and surrounding organisations. The HSFA has been in lockdown since 16th March (10 days before the national lockdown).
Over 150 HSFA essential staff and service providers (Geratec & Xone Integrated Security) moved into various HSFA sites and nearby halls. Senior managers, unit managers, admin staff, nursing and caring staff, cleaning and laundry staff, have volunteered to stay on site to minimise the risk of contamination. They have all gone beyond the call of duty, doing whatever it takes to support our residents to remain in their units. They are our hero’s.
