Golf Days that support a worth cause is a win-win situation – a good way to support a charity and a great way to end a week! Some of the Exec team and Board of the HSFA played in a four-ball at the recent Helderberg Hospice Golf Day! Thank you Helderberg Hospice for a well-organised event and we were delighted to support with a water and drinks stand for the golfers. Watch this space for the next Golf Day in support of the HSFA (Helderberg Society For the Aged) on 7th Oct 2022.

Today I painted a new residents nails at work and as we were going over colors, she mentioned she wanted clear. The only thought that came to my mind was “CLEAR?! That’s no fun.” I asked her why she wanted clear and she said, “My hands are ugly, I don’t want to draw attention to them.” I then carefully responded with, “Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day.” And with that, she went with the color pink for her nails. Sometimes what we are so insecure with, others find beauty in.

Happy Spring Day! A kind donor (who wished to remain anonymous) and her sweet son kindly delivered beautiful flowers to the HSFA to fill our rooms and hallways with happiness! Thank you for being so thoughtful. #springday #springday2021

Joshua Buchweitz, a Grade 7 scholar from
Beaumont Primary School , showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Joshua used his own savings and raised money from friends, neighbours and family to purchase a generous hamper of toiletries and treats for the residents (those who do not have family support) of the Support Center of the HSFA. When asked why he chose the HSFA as his retirement group as his beneficiary, he explained that his lovely granny Elana Kriedemann who recently retired from at the HSFA, told him that the HSFA is a special place, and she also explained that some residents needed some extra support and that they depend on the community for help. Thank you Joshua for your thoughtfulness, kindness and leadership – you are a true gentlemen. Your lovely granny can certainly be proud of you.

HSFA hosted a series of enjoyable (but Covid regulated) luncheons for their Assisted Living (Silver Oaks Lodge and Robari Lodge), Frailcare (Mountview and Support Centre) and some Independent Units (Vonke House and Swannack Gardens) residents to raise awareness regarding this campaign. The lunches had a beach theme staff and residents were encouraged to dress up in turquoise or beach gear and feel the sand between their toes, whilst sipping on turquoise cocktails and listening to tunes like ‘Kokomo’, ‘Under the Boardwalk’ and the like! Images of turquoise oceans were projected on the walls to transport the residents to favourite beach memories and Geratec served delicious a seafood cocktails, beach burgers and turquoise-coloured desserts. On 15th June – World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day –HSFA staff wore a turquoise ribbon in support of the “Turn Turquoise for the Elderly” National Campaign.
