Apr 11, 2022 | Drama for Elderly, Living longer, Retirement, Somerset West
March and April were months full of drama at the HSFA! So when our residents were saying “Break a Leg” this did not mean that next step meant a hip or knee replacement, but rather a moment of glory on stage!!
All units (Independent Living, Assisted Living and Frailcare) were invited to join drama workshops as presented by two lovely ladies, Coleen van Staden and Celia Musikanth from
Circle Productions Cape Town . Howls of laughter and impassioned shouting was heard in the halls of the units with our residents acting out Shakespeare’s most rude lines (sometimes translated into Afrikaans!) Movement and mime were practiced, and character sketches as well as poems were rolled out. Thank you to the lovely drama teachers who showed us how many theatrical players, tuneful singers, and drama queens we actually have at the HSFA! Watch this space – HSFA HAS TALENT will be back with a vengeance!

The residents and staff of the HSFA welcomed the knowledge of Dr Van Zyl and Prof Maqungo, both specialists in Osteoporosis, at the HSFA last week. The talks were kindly arranged through Busamed Hospital. They were both very informative and highlighted the prevalence of Osteoporosis, its prevention and care alternatives. #osteoporosis #Busamed

The HSFA staff are ahead of our game as usual and have got our booster shots for Covid-19! The staff were initially part of the Sisonke Covid vaccination trials over 6 months previously where we were fully vaccinated with J&J and now welcomed the booster shots to ensure extra protection and additional safety of our residents. #COVID19 #covidprevention

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. A couple of the HSFA units did an educational day to remind their staff of the need for self screenings and mamogrammes. Thank you to all involved.

Today I painted a new residents nails at work and as we were going over colors, she mentioned she wanted clear. The only thought that came to my mind was “CLEAR?! That’s no fun.” I asked her why she wanted clear and she said, “My hands are ugly, I don’t want to draw attention to them.” I then carefully responded with, “Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day.” And with that, she went with the color pink for her nails. Sometimes what we are so insecure with, others find beauty in.

The Helderberg Society For the Aged’s residents from Assisted Living (Silver Oaks Lodge and Robari Lodge), Frailcare (Mountview and Support Centre) and some Independent Units (Vonke House and Swannack Gardens), enjoyed a South African heartwarming Welcome-Welkom,-Wamkelekile at our SA themed luncheons this month. We were reminded, despite our country’s recent troubles, how South Africans do stand together and give back to their communities … as well as enjoy a bietjie potjie, sherry and dans!! Thank you
GERATEC for serving South African favourites – potjies, melktert, samp and beans, vetkoek and more…
