Hospice Week in 2025 is from May 4th to May 10th. This is an annual celebration of hospice and palliative care services, recognising the work of professionals and volunteers. It is a week to celebrate the achievements of hospice and palliative care programs, highlight partnerships, and raise awareness about the importance of palliative care. Palliative care is all about providing relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness, aiming to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families.
At HSFA, our Kiewiet unit offers palliative and respite care, including:
– 24-hour nursing care in a safe and caring environment
– Furnished temporary accommodation
– All meals and teas
– Emergency call buttons
– Activities and entertainment
– Laundry and housekeeping services
– Retirement Village Package DSTV
We’re committed to compassionate care, ensuring our residents get the support they need during these times. “Providing palliative care is not just about medical support; it’s about offering comfort and dignity to our residents during their most vulnerable moments.”, Nazelle Speelman, Nursing Care Manager at HSFA.
The HSFA also supports and partners with
Helderberg Hospice and acknowledges what an important role they have in our community.

Feb 20, 2025 | Frail Care, HSFA Staff Training, Palliative Care, Respite, Training
We are incredibly proud to announce that 10 of our caregivers have successfully completed their Introduction to Palliative Care course with APCC!

Hosted by
Helderberg Hospice, this training equipped them with essential skills to provide compassionate and specialized care to our residents. A huge shoutout to Sr. Thandi, who put them through their ranks and ensured they excelled in both their exam and practical assessments!
This training was made possible thanks to a generous donation received by Helderberg Training Centre, which we are utilising to upskill our employees and enhance the quality of care we provide.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in this journey—together, we are making a real difference!

The team that benefitted: Bernadette Wessels, Cindy Wessels, Vuyokazi Vavi, Bongiwe Combo, Nombeko Mqanduli, Roche Cloete, Patience Ntsholo, Eunice Ntsholo, Monique Visagie and Deidre Samuels

This October, residents and staff of the Helderberg Society for the Aged came together to show support for National Breast Cancer Month with a series of heartwarming activities and a sea of pink! Together, we raised awareness, honored survivors, and remembered those affected by breast cancer. From pink-themed events to educational sessions, our HSFA family is united in hope and strength, spreading love and solidarity throughout our community.

As part of our mission to enhance the quality of care for our residents, the HSFA is committed to continually upskilling our team. Recently, a group of our employees attended an introductory workshop on Senior Mind Moves, exploring how specific Mind Moves® exercises improve movement, balance, and cognitive clarity. The interactive workshop began with the “three-in-one brain” theory, followed by insights into sensory development and its influence on our daily lives. Presenters also shared their firsthand experiences using Mind Moves in retirement communities, where it’s proven to enhance residents’ well-being.
Our goal is to train our carers to incorporate these exercises into our chair-based programs, helping residents maintain and even improve their physical and cognitive abilities.
“As we age, survival behavior can make us feel lost and vulnerable, causing our confidence to waver. Senior Mind Moves addresses this by slowing or even reversing the aging process through sensory, brain, and muscle stimulation. Simple, effective movements can dynamically improve quality of life, ensuring the world doesn’t shrink for our elderly.” — Melodie de Jager, Mind Moves Institute Researcher and Developer.
For more information, please visit Senior Mind Moves.
See below interview of Achmat Smith and Sarita Julies who attended the workshop.
